Simple test . . . stand in front of a mirror and allow your arms to relax at your side. When you look in the mirror at your hands, what do you see first? Your thumbs? The back of your hand? Is one side in a different position than the other? Those are the types of things we are going to be evaluating this week in my classes.
Our bodies are designed such that we work in front of our bodies on a regular basis so there is the natural tendency to be in an arm forward position. Over time this activity tends to roll the shoulders in, the pecs get short and the back gets tired from being in a constant overstretched orientation.
Eventually our body realizes this is going to continue happening and it knows it needs to do something to compensate and adapt to this awkward body position, so it sets up a new normal and before you know it this rolled forward shoulder position becomes your standard posture.
