Body Shame Part I, Issues
by Chandra Stevens, Ki-Hara Trainer, RiversZen
Our bodies are our most precious tool we have. “An intricate, complex, and reliable organism”; it serves us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It expects very little in return.
Why is it that when it comes to things such as us wanting to care for our bodies, for instance, attending a group class, we feel we are not in a position to do so. But rather need to work out in private and diet before we can attend a class?
More often than not, we listen to our minds before trusting in our bodies and our own capabilities. We are so easily sucked into following our minds- no questions asked. Listening to its assumptions, lies and criticisms we often see day to day. We allow our minds to dictate our perceptions. And mold our social structures of unrealistic ideas. Our bodies are what we perceive it to be- unfortunately it is more often shaped by social attitudes.
I have been there, I have been that person who refused to practice yoga or attend fitness classes for fear of judgement and feeling like I was just “too out of shape”.
I didn’t want to be “the fat girl” in class everyone would be grossed out by. Living in today’s society led me to believe being fit meant I had to weigh 120 pounds, and it needed to be mostly muscle.
It actually led me to become depressed about the way I looked, and led me into an emotional eating frenzy whether that be eating too much at times, or eating far too little.
I feared the mirror, and often felt really uncomfortable naked. It took me many years to pull out of this mind frame, and be happy for myself so that I could go to a fitness studio that I felt welcomed and comfortable at. Once I realized I was more than just my body (obviously, because let’s face it, I’m pretty awesome!) I let go of many pressures I placed onto myself.
